Is FSSAI mandatory for all food businesses?

FSSI which stands for the Food Safety and Standard Authority of india. It is an autonomous statutory and executive body that maintains food safety, standard, and public health.

It is part of the Ministry of Family Health and Welfare. It has been formed under the Food safety and standard authority of India act, 2006. The Food Safety and Standard Authority of India was set up in 2008 with the supervision of the food quality and hygiene of India. FSSAI has the responsibility to regulate the framework and to supervise the ongoing norms. It is the highest authority in the food safety and security sector. The FSSAI headquarters is in New Delhi, and the other 6 regional offices are in Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Cochin, Chennai, Kolkata, and Delhi.

This act tells us the standards of food items and regulates their traders, manufacturers, storage, distribution, sale, and import, for the ensurity of safe and standard quality of food for people’s consumption.

 Before passing this FSSAI act there were some acts that were in use like the fruit product order act, vegetables product order act and prevention of food adulteration act, etc.

After FSSAI came into operation all the previous acts have been consolidated and amalgamated and made one consolidated act which is now known as the Food Safety and Standard Authority of India.

the food business enterprises in India who are running their business in the market need to get registered through the FSSAI act, without the FSSAI registration no food manufacturers and suppliers can run their business in the public market and those food manufacturers are not eligible for the online platform registration like Amazon, Zomato, etc. so it is mandatory to have this registration.  if anyone is doing so it is illegal and can be sued against him. In a developing country like India which is very big in size and population,  there is a need to maintain public health and food safety because there are many activities being practiced in the food market business, and there may be more chances of malpractices in the food market. To refrain from these activities, the Government of India implemented the law as FSSAI act to curb this malpractice prevailing in the food market industries. Therefore it is necessary to register the food business industries to have the FSSAI registration to run their business in the market. FSSAI registration is the main tool for food manufacturers to run their business in the public market.

It is mandatory for the food business owners to have this FSSAI registration.


For the Food registration, the food companies owners should have the supporting documents. These documents are address proof id, passport size photo, business id card and business activity details.

there are three types of Food license, Basic Fssai registration in which the annual turnover of the company should be below 12 L, second is state Food license, here the annual turnover of the food firms should above the 12 L but below the 20 L and the last is central Fssai license, the annual turnover should be above 20 L. according to applicability the food owner can apply and get registered.


Now above all the facts we can get to the conclusion that to run any food businesses the Fssai registration is required. The process of registration and the need for registration are mentioned above.
